Don't Let Christmas Have All The Fun!

We all know January can be pretty shit! It's wet and it's cold, and all you really want to do is curl up in a little fat ball in front of a fire, eating chocolate.

It's a whole month of crying over your salad and trying not to think about cheese, it's the month of trying desperately to start exercising but only managing to walk to the corner shop and buy a bag of nachos while watching that skinny bitch from next door run past you looking like a goddess! (It's ok to hate her in January, even if she is really nice!) it's the month you avoid looking at your bank balance because you already know you spent everything back in December when you decided that you had to go out for dinner every night because it's Christmas, and screw it lets order champagne over prosecco cause it's Christmas, that new party dress? Hell yes it's Christmas! On top of all this it's raining, cold and there's nothing to look forward to until Easter! The idea you'd go away somewhere warm and glorious in the summer seems to be a distant memory (don't worry we'll get there, don't give up hope!) and your Instagram feed is filled with photos of people off skiing or lounging on a beach in the Caribbean, meanwhile you're sat on the couch using the extra pounds you put on over Christmas to balance a bowl of popcorn on your stomach while you binge watch Netflix and fight off a stinking cold.

I'm really hoping you're reading this and agreeing with me so I know I'm not alone in this!

You know what I decided? January doesn't have to suck! There are plenty of things that you can do to help yourself ease out of the holiday season and make the most of snuggly winter goodness! Pretty soon Spring will be upon us and we wont be able to live in our cosy chunky knit jumpers anymore (man I love chunky knits, as soon as it's September I've got mine on doesn't matter how warm the weather or how much I'm sweating!!) you wont be able to hide grubby hair under a wooly hat without looking just a little bit odd and for those of you that are like me and are yet to start the new year's exercising, remember that while it's cold you're less likely to get red and blotchy with heat when you go for a run or bike ride or hike... Well actually if you're anything like me that will happen regardless of the temperature so... do it anyway, go out breathe in the crisp air and know that by the time summer rolls around you'll be that little be fitter!

Have I mentioned fluffy furry coats?

This is my very long winded way of saying, the fun doesn't have to stop just because Christmas is over. Here is a list of things that you can do between now and spring to take the sting out of the cold miserable weather and the holiday blues.
  • Treat yourself to a little pamper session. Get your nails done, a spray tan or maybe a wax. All that pre-Christmas primping doesn't have to stop just because Christmas is over! If like me you're totally strapped for cash maybe a little DIY manicure at home with a glass of wine!
  • Go to the Theatre or Cinema - The cheapest time of year for theatre tickets in January and February, so every January CiarĂ¡n and I book to go see a show as something to look forward to when we get back from Christmas with the family. This year we booked 2!! Last week we saw The Nutcracker!
  • Go Ice Skating - the rink at Somerset House is open until 15 January so go go go!
  • Go to a museum - There are so many wonderful museums and art galleries all over the country and so many of them are free, it's one of my favourite ways to spend a day. Plus it will get you out of the rain!
  • Make plans for a few after work drinks with friends, or forego the booze and go straight for the frozen yoghurt...
...It's vegan too, so basically healthy and therefore January approved!

What do you always do in January to stave off the winter blues?
